Titian v Manet
I suppose that this piece can, in a rather convoluted way, be linked to the earlier piece I did on Art or Pornography. Here I want to make a comparison of two paintings, Titian’s Venus of Urbino and Manet’s Olympia, and I want to do it in a short and simple manner; basically I want to compare the eroticism contained within them. Personally I think that Titian’s painting is by far the more sexually explicit of the two paintings and that Manet’s is the more erotic. Compare them and see what you think:-
So why do I think these thoughts about these paintings? Well it has everything to do with hand position; if we take Titian’s Venus, she appears to all intents and purposes to be masturbating, whereas Manet’s Olympia appears to be seductively hiding her genitalia from view. It is this reason that makes it difficult for me to understand the outcry against Manet’s Olympia when it was first exhibited. I have said my piece, it is now up to the reader to make his/her own decision.

Olympia may be hiding her genetalia but the hand maiden is holding a bunch of flowers that, to me, with its outer wrappings represents the female vulva bursting full of ripe flowers for picking/been picked. Quite suggestive.
With the Titian, what are the two characters in the background doing? One rolling up her sleeves and the other kneeling down in a subjugated way. Bizarre.
Welcome Doris, it is always nice to see new readers…
I deliberately avoided a full analysis of these pictures as I did not want to prompt others with my own preconceived thoughts of them. I agree with you about the flowers in the Manet; which also beg the question as to whom they are from, and to some extent make us question whether or not this is a lady of negotiable virtue. I think that this also adds to the eroticism of this painting.
As for the Titian, I have always thought this to be quite a bizarre painting, and one that I have great difficulty coming to terms with; and I don’t think that I want to go down the path of thinking about what the background figures are doing…
“negotiable virtue” LOL She’s wearing high heels in bed for gawds sake!!!
Fair point, but might she not just have forgotten to take them off? LOL – And high heels are not necessarily synonymous with easy virtue, are they?
i believe that Titian is a way better artist… and i will leave it at that…
Fair comment John, I deliberately tried not to make any subjective remarks about either painting; at the end of the day it is all down to the taste of the individual. I agree that Titian was a great artist and I love his work; but given that Manet and his contemporaries were pushing back the boundaries of art and breaking the tradition of academicism and realism at a time when such things were extremely popular I think that they were also great artists in their own way.
hi there, just found this site. out of the blue, i`m looking for another version of this theme, maybe someone could give me a lead ?? i saw a framed piece of newspaper from the 18somethings`s with two women in the venus/olympia set up, the laying one being white, the other darker one with a fan to cool her friend down. noone knows where to start looking for the original artist. looks like printed sepia, but then, that`s only the newspaper perhaps.
thanks.

lamo: I have copied your comment into a post as I too would be interested to know more about the work you mentioned, and have to admit that until your comment I didn’t even know it existed…
