Looking at Paintings

Diego Martelli Listening to his Ipod…

We have just returned from what turned out to be a most impressive exhibition, Impressionism & Scotland. This exhibition was far more than I expected, I had expected to find a few top notch paintings accompanied by a whole lot of second rate works. However, this was not the case, yes there were some works there that I would class as second rate, but on the whole the works on display were works by the Impressionists and Scottish painters that are easily recognisable to anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.

I think that what interested me most was the fact that having the paintings of the Impressionists, the Glasgow Boys and of the Scottish Colourists hung in such close proximity to one another it is only to easy to see where the influences of the latter groups came from. It was also good to come face to face with some old friends that one does not often get to see, such as Van Gogh, Whistler and Sisley.

There was one quite funny moment which occurred when we saw Degas’ Diego Martelli, who to quote the National Galleries of Scotland:-

Surrounded by his books, Martelli appears more as a scholar lost in thought, as opposed to the introverted, depressed man in the sketch.

This is quite self evident, however Bondwoman saw another sdie to this man sat in contemplative mood, she saw a man sat listening to his Ipod… Which naturally led me to doctor the original (above) and to produce the improved version below.

Update 17/11/08:

Crafty Green Poet also has some very good points to make about this exhibition.
